SHEIN vs Temu vs AliExpress: Returns, Protection and Real Costs
Updated 2026-10-06 · 4 min read
SHEIN, Temu and AliExpress all sell low-cost goods shipped mostly from overseas, but they are not interchangeable. SHEIN is built around fashion, Temu around a little of everything with heavy gamified promotions, and AliExpress is an open marketplace of independent sellers. What separates them for a budget shopper is less the sticker price and more what happens when something goes wrong.
The quick comparison

SHEIN: strongest for clothes, strict on some returns
SHEIN’s size charts, customer photos and reviews are the main reason to buy clothes there: you can usually see an item on a real person before ordering. Its points program is straightforward, and the Free Trial Center is a genuine, if random, way to receive items for review.
The catch is the non-returnable list. Underwear, lingerie, bodysuits, jewelry and beauty items cannot be sent back, and in Canada that list also includes swimwear. Our SHEIN shipping and returns guide has the full list and the free-shipping thresholds for the US.
Temu: long return window, lots of promotions
The Canadian version of Temu’s return policy (updated September 2026) gives 90 days from purchase, the first return on every order free, and asks you to send items back within 14 days of starting a return. Refunds typically land in 5-14 business days, and Temu’s policy says original shipping and import charges are refunded only when the seller is at fault.
Some items are excluded: worn or washed clothing, food, some health products, some underwear, some custom items and some free gifts. Electronics have their own windows.
Temu’s interface pushes games, spin wheels, progress bars and referral offers hard. These are promotions with their own rules, not free money; see Temu free gifts explained before investing time in them. Temu’s site also states that it won’t ask for extra fees by text or email, which is a useful line to remember when a “Temu” message asks you to pay.
AliExpress: widest range, buyer protection by claim
AliExpress works like a big mall of independent sellers, so quality and shipping vary by store. Its Buyer Protection page covers three situations:
- The order doesn’t arrive within the delivery window shown on your order page.
- The item arrives damaged.
- The item isn’t as described, reported within 15 days of receipt.
Refunds go to your original payment method or as a fast refund bonus. Eligible items get free return shipping, but if you simply change your mind, the return shipping is on you. Underwear, socks, food, batteries and custom items are excluded.
Check each store’s rating, order count and reviews before buying, because the seller matters more on AliExpress than on the other two.
Costs that change the real price
- Shipping thresholds: a cheap item can cost more than a pricier one once shipping is added. Compare checkout totals.
- Return fees: two returns from the same order cost more on SHEIN and Temu than one combined return.
- Duties and taxes: US Customs suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value imports from all countries from August 29, 2025, so import costs now factor into what these platforms charge. Look at the checkout total, not the listing price.
- Payment method: all three offer common card payments. SHEIN and Temu also list buy-now-pay-later options; splitting a small order into installments doesn’t make it cheaper.
Which should you use?
| If you want… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Clothes where fit matters | SHEIN, using size charts and customer photos |
| Cheap home and gadget odds and ends | Temu, keeping an eye on the return exclusions |
| A specific part, tool or hobby item | AliExpress, from a well-rated store |
| The easiest return of a whole order | Compare the current policies; Temu’s window is longest in the version we read |
Save on whichever you pick
On SHEIN, use points, one good coupon per order and photo reviews for points. On all three, ignore “free” offers outside their own apps: our scam red flags guide shows what the fakes look like.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheapest, SHEIN, Temu or AliExpress?
It depends on the item. Prices move daily and shipping and return costs change the real total, so compare the final checkout price for the same type of item rather than the listing price.
Which has the easiest returns?
On paper, Temu has the longest window in the Canadian policy we checked (90 days from purchase) and a free first return per order. SHEIN gives 30 days with a free first return per order. AliExpress returns depend on the item and the reason.
Are these sites safe to buy from?
They are large, established marketplaces. The bigger risk is fake lookalike sites and scam offers using their names, so always shop through their own apps or websites.
